PROJECT NEW HOPE - EAST TIMOR
East
Timor is among the newest and the poorest nations of the
world.
Since independence in 2002 this little nation of around 1 million
people has been grappling with crippling poverty, appalling health
statistics, lack of jobs and infrastructure and at the same time trying
to learn the basics of democracy
Since
2001 a group of people on the Hibibscus Coast has been involved in
several villages in East Timor providing water and sanitation, holding
medical clinics, providing sponsorship for children to go to school,
repairing homes and repairing and equipping schools.
They
have formed a Trust, HETA Trust (Hibiscus Coast East Timor Appeal
Trust) and registered it with the NZ government as an NGO
involved
in overseas aid and qualified to receive aid monies.
Heta's
next projects include a community centre in the village of
Laulora.
This centre will provide room for a pre-school, a place
for the villagers to hold meetings and training programmes,
and a medical clinic. We are also providing much needed assistance to the
local schools in that area.
To raise funds for these projects HETA recently ran a GIANT book sale at Kingsway School Orewa, which was a great success. (NZ)

We
have some books left over and we will be running further sales in the near future.
